Elon Musk's Bold New Venture, xAI: Pioneering AI to Decode the Mysteries of the
Elon Musk has officially launched xAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) company intended to comprehend “the true nature of the universe” and compete with OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT. Musk has previously expressed criticisms of OpenAI. xAI, initially formed in March in partnership with Jared Birchall, will be led by Musk and will employ AI industry veterans from DeepMind, Microsoft, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.
Musk’s announcement comes after reports that he purchased thousands of GPUs from Nvidia for AI applications, and ongoing investor conversations regarding funding for the AI startup. The xAI team includes industry experts who have previously contributed to AI advancements such as the Adam optimizer, Batch Normalization, Layer Normalization, Transformer-XL, Autoformalization, and the discovery of adversarial examples.
Despite being a separate entity, xAI intends to collaborate closely with other Musk-led companies, such as Twitter and Tesla. Interestingly, Musk’s decision to create a company that may speed up AI development follows his earlier calls for a six-month pause in training AI models more powerful than GPT-4, revealing his complicated relationship with AI.
Dan Hendrycks from the Center for AI Safety will serve as an advisor to the xAI team. The company plans a public Q&A session via Twitter Spaces and is actively recruiting engineers and researchers for its Bay Area-based technical staff.
