Amazon’s $4B Power Move in AI Race with Anthropic
Amazon plans to invest up to $4 billion in AI startup Anthropic, marking
a significant move in the competitive AI sector. Initially, Amazon will
invest $1.25 billion for a minority stake in Anthropic, with an option
to increase this to $4 billion. Anthropic, which recently introduced its
premium chatbot subscription plan, Claude 2, aims to develop an
advanced “frontier model” AI, which will necessitate significant
funding. Amazon’s investment will not only provide financial support but
also offer compute power to aid Anthropic’s AI model development. As
part of the agreement, Anthropic will use Amazon’s AWS for critical
workloads and will utilize AWS’s Trainium and Inferentia chips for its
AI models. Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, expressed optimism about the
collaboration’s potential to enhance customer experiences. To date,
Anthropic has raised $2.7 billion and was valued at $5 billion earlier
this year. This partnership will bolster Amazon’s position in the
rapidly growing AI industry. Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, is confident
about the future potential of their technology and has committed to
providing AWS customers with access to its advanced AI models.
