Fallout London = Ambitious Mod
Fallout: London is a highly anticipated, expansion-sized mod for Bethesda’s 2015 post-apocalyptic RPG, Fallout 4. This mod, developed by the dedicated team at Team FOLON, is nearing release as it awaits final quality assurance tests. Team FOLON recently announced that the “end is in sight” and confirmed that several builds had been sent to GOG, a CD Projekt Red-owned Steam competitor, for the final green light.
The mod aims to offer an entirely new experience by setting a Fallout game outside of the United States for the first time. True to its name, Fallout: London takes players into the heart of a post-apocalyptic London. The game will feature everything from stuffy parliamentary aristocrats to a resurrection of the Knights of the Round Table and an uncompromising cult of revolutionaries. The team behind this project includes talented modders, writers, 3D artists, voice actors, and many more creative individuals who share a deep love for the Fallout series.
Fallout: London stands apart from other mods due to its unique setting and ambitious scope. The mod encapsulates the gritty, adventurous nature of the Fallout games while introducing new factions, storylines, NPCs, weapons, and creatures. The setting is meticulously designed to reflect the history and aesthetics of London, albeit with a nuclear twist.
Development and Challenges
The development of Fallout: London has been a labor-intensive process involving a diverse group of individuals, both amateurs and industry professionals. Each member of the team is individually recruited for their contributions and talent in game design and modding. This project has required a high level of professionalism and dedication, with the team working tirelessly to deliver an unforgettable gaming experience.
Despite the team’s hard work, the project has faced several challenges. Fallout: London was initially set to release on April 23, 2024. However, a surprise update for Fallout 4 from Bethesda, the actual developer of the Fallout series, threatened to disrupt the mod’s release. This update required Team FOLON to engage in non-stop tweaking and testing to ensure stability. Dean Carter, the project lead, expressed frustration over Bethesda’s lack of communication regarding the update, which he felt significantly impacted their progress.
To clarify the current status and quell speculation, Team FOLON posted on X/Twitter on July 6, 2024, stating:
“Once they’ve completed the process of double-checking that Fallout: London and its installer work on all supported machines, we should be good to go. Yes, we have our own installer, and downgrader too. It is in all of our interests that this final QA process is carried out in full, and we are very thankful that GOG is assisting. While it may seem like not a lot is going on, we can assure you that the heads of the department have been working non-stop behind the scenes during this time to make the release build as good as it can be. The end is in sight.”
Unique Features and Factions
One of the standout features of Fallout: London is its departure from traditional Fallout elements. The Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) has not reached London, meaning players will not encounter Super Mutants, Centaurs, or Deathclaws. Vault-Tec, an American company, has no presence in London. Instead, the mod introduces a unique version of a vault, serving as a shelter beneath the ground but differing significantly from the Vault-Tec designs.
The game features several new factions, each with its own distinct identity and role in the story:
The Gentry: Descendants of pre-war aristocracy and the British government, they rule London from Westminster. Their rule is strict and feudal, requiring citizens to possess a royal charter and pay tithes in exchange for protection.
Tommies: Originally formed as a militia to protect London, they now serve the Gentry with little gratitude. Unaware of their potential, they hold the key to London’s future but must first determine the right path.
5th Column: Led by Eve Varney, this group aims to dismantle the existing order and rebuild a new empire from the ashes. They gain popularity among the lower classes and advocate for radical change.
Camelot: Inspired by King Arthur and WWII commandos, this underground movement fights for a representative republic. They seek to overthrow the Gentry and establish a fair government for all.
Isle of Dogs Syndicate: A criminal organization controlling the borough of Millwall, they operate scavenger operations and chafe under Gentry rule. They are wealthy but open to change if it benefits them.
Vagabonds: Enemies of the Isle of Dogs Syndicate, they are driven by revenge for their murdered leader. Led by Sebastian Gaunt, they draw inspiration from British gangsters and seek to destroy their rivals.
Angel: A mysterious group rumored to descend from a pre-war deep science ministry. They are believed to have agents everywhere and secretly control London, though their existence is shrouded in mystery.
Game Details and Timeline
Fallout: London is set in the year 2237, fitting between the events of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2, and 50 years before Fallout 4. The game features a condensed version of London, focusing on the central boroughs and offering a map size comparable to the combined areas of the vanilla Fallout 4 Commonwealth and Far Harbor.
The mod requires Fallout 4 and all its DLCs to run. There are no plans to release a ‘lite’ version due to the significant reworking that would entail. The mod will not feature a voiced protagonist, a decision made after thorough internal and external discussions.
Fallout: London promises to be a groundbreaking addition to the Fallout series, offering players a fresh and immersive experience in a new setting. With its unique factions, rich storyline, and dedicated development team, the mod is set to make a significant impact on the Fallout community. As it nears release, fans eagerly await the chance to explore the post-apocalyptic streets of London and engage with its diverse and intriguing world.
